Oceania

& Global Indigenous Research Hub

Established in early 2025 by Associate Professor Holly Randell-Moon and Dr Nick Ruddell, the Oceania and Global Indigenous Research Hub acts as an arm that reaches across all Faculties and Institutes across Charles Sturt University to support Global Indigenous Studies and Pasifika Studies research. The Hub is multi-disciplinary and builds on collaborative research that supports the trans-national employment, education, and language needs of First Nations and Pasifika as well as other communities in the global south.

The Hub is primarily focused on the FOR code 4519 to derive benefit from a critical mass of Indigenous Studies research undertaken outside of codes that are specifically focused on Indigenous Australian Studies.

Research Themes

Education and Pedagogy

Culturally grounded teaching practices and relational pedagogies are central to this theme. We support transformative research that aligns or repositions First Nations knowledges in learning environments, challenges colonial legacies, and promotes student success across the global south.

Language and Culture

This area supports the revitalisation and reclamation of First Nations languages, sustaining cultural continuity through education, storytelling, intergenerational knowledge transfer, and community-led policy advocacy.

Nation Building and Governance

Focused on First Nations-led governance and self-determination, this theme supports research that strengthens sovereign Nation-building, rethinks institutional structures, and promotes culturally responsive leadership and policy development.

Health Leadership and Access

This stream prioritises First Nations concepts of wellbeing, leadership, and equitable access. Projects explore systemic transformation, relational ethics in healthcare, and culturally appropriate models that empower First Nations health sovereignty.

AI, Technology and Digital Inclusion

This area focuses on the intersection of First Nations knowledges and emerging technologies to shape socially and culturally equitable and inclusive digital futures.
